Nearly one year ago, as lawyers faced off in the first battle over Detroit’s bankruptcy bid, Meijer opened its first store at the Gateway Marketplace shopping center on 8 Mile Road and Woodward Ave. The retailer is not giving up on the economically depressed city, either, as it prepares to open a second location.
Meijer announced that it will once again double match every customer's $10 Simply Give donation made April 12 to 13 to help restock the shelves of local food pantries that were depleted over the holidays.
Meijer's "Simply Give Week" garnered more than $145,000 in donations from its customers. The effort, combined with the commitment from Meijer to double all donations made Sept. 2 to 8, brought the week's total donation to $437,400, Meijer co-chairman Hank Meijer said.
The economic downturn has been especially tough on the Midwestern region of the United States, but now Meijer is bringing some renewed hope to the area with news it will invest more than $75 million in a major remodel project for stores in Michigan and Ohio, with eight Michigan stores benefiting from this new initiative.
